poems of Iberia

A BBC article that caught my eye focuses on the cross-cultural poetry of Iberia 1000 years ago. A sampling:
1. The multiple troubles of man,
my brother, like slander and pain,
amaze you? Consider the heart which holds them all
in strangeness, and doesn't break.

2. Could kings right a people gone bad,
while they themselves are twisted?
How, in the woods, could shadows that bend
be straight when the trees are crooked?

3. Luxuries ease, but when trouble comes
people are plagued for the wealth they've accrued.
The peacock's tail is spectacular --
but it weighs him down on the day he's pursued.
