small matters

Small things that have crossed my bow of late:

-- On the radio, though not on Wikipedia, the 1908 classic baseball song, "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" was credited (by association) to the women's suffrage movement and the fact that women were considered unlady-like if they went to other than prescribed places in the park ... and/or hooted and hollered for their favored team.

-- The TV serial "Black Mirror," one of whose episodes ("Nosedive") I watched a couple of days back left me writhing in revulsion and delighting that anyone could make such an episode. It was as thoroughly repulsive as anything I have ever seen and yet in that repulsion, it was splendiferous .... creating enough nightmare potential for a year or even a lifetime.

-- Snippets of the on-the-telly movie "Smoke," whose silences drove the curiosity harpoon in ... wonderful when people can use silence without flaunting the fact that they are using it. Sort of like good oriental art where empty space is vital right up to the moment some TED talker tells you how vital it is.
