passing the buck at Fukushima

For those with an interest in nuclear power, its players, and its downside effects, this open letter to the foreign minister of Japan may be informative ... not least for the participation of General Electric in the creation of the Fukushima Daiichi plant that continues to spread pollution in the wake of its March 11, 2011, disaster.

  1. Wouldn't it be nice if G. E. stepped up?

But given the fact that the Japanese government didn't act in
    1. November 1971, officials at the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) expressed concern about design flaws in General Electric’s Mark I nuclear reactors, nor in
    2. 1976, when three GE nuclear engineers became so concerned about the dangerous shortcomings of the GE design that they resigned their highly paid positions in protest and testified about the reasons they had done so before the U.S. Congress.

How can the Japanese government then turn around some forty years later and claim ignorance or that it was mislead?

In in the early '70s I was in college. I had a physics teacher who actually took out time from class one day in 1971 to talk to us about the dangers of nuclear power. I and some friends came away with goose bumps and the idea "don't really know what this man is talking about but he sounds like he understands so I sure do want nuclear power anywhere near me." That has stayed with me ever since.

This makes me wonder what other Evil things GE has brought to life over the years.
